I Should Really Document, Catalog, and Tag the Results of My Experiments

If you are like me, and cringe every time you hand over your precious stones to the jewelers in the mall to have them "clean them for free", but you really want their glitz to make you as giddy as the day your snookieookums asked that magic question, then you should try these fast and simple recipes I have experimented with. I wish I had a better picture to show more detail, because these recipes REALLY work!!! you should try them! I am a little embarrassed to say that I have spent quite a bit of money on jewelry cleaners and cleaning machines just to keep my gorgeous sparkles sparking! Now I don't have to, and neither do you! ;) the one I experimented with is recipe #2 (just for the aroma factor that recipe #1 has) Now there is NO excuse for me to go out wearing dull jewelry ever again, and I don't have to break the bank to keep them that way!

Recipe for Jewelry Cleaner - 1

You need
ammonia, 1/2 teaspoon
detergent, 2 tablespoons
water, 1 cup

Procedure: Take a cup of water in a bowl, add 1/2 teaspoon of ammonia and 2 tablespoons of detergent. Mix it properly and your jewelry cleaner is ready! Just be careful, when you add ammonia because it has a pungent odor.
Recipe for Jewelry Cleaner - 2

You need
dish detergent, 1 tablespoon
salt, 1 tablespoon
baking soda, 1 teaspoon
water, 1 cup

Procedure: First, heat the water for two minutes. Pour it into a glass bowl. Add baking soda, salt and dish detergent. Mix well.

Tips to Clean Jewelry
  • Make a mixture of the jewelry cleaner and water.
  • Soak the jewelry in that mixture for about 10 minutes.
  • If necessary, brush it lightly with a soft brush.
  • Remove the jewelry from the cleaning solution and rinse it in cold water. Don't use rough fabric to dry the jewelry, it can cause scratch on the surface of the jewelry.
  • Dry it with a soft fabric.
Always use mild detergents and chemicals to clean your jewelry. Use plastic hand gloves, while cleaning the jewelry because some detergents might cause allergic reaction to your hands. You can even use a soft bristled toothbrush (preferably a used toothbrush) to clean the jewelry. Use 70% isopropyl alcohol to remove the oil and grease from the jewelry and then wash it with cold water. Avoid using any bleach or acid to clean the jewelry. Do not use the solution to clean gemstones. Dispose the jewelry cleaning solution after use, because its effectiveness decreases with time. Make a fresh cleaner for the next time.

I've always wondered about the "clean it yourself" recipes. It's good to know it really works! I'll have to try it soon, I haven't had mine cleaned in AGES :)
